South Carolina Legal Services (SCLS) is a non-profit law firm. We provide free legal services in a wide variety of civil (non-criminal) legal matters to eligible low income residents of South Carolina. Our mission is to provide legal services to protect the rights and represent the interests of low income South Carolinians.

Victory At S.C. Court Of Appeals

Navigating public benefits can be difficult for seniors. This was never more apparent than in our recent appellate victory where the S.C. Court of Appeals was asked to reverse a trial court decision against our client, an elderly, disabled veteran from Anderson County. SCLS attorney Susan Ingles and PAI attorney Sharon Ward teamed up to obtain reversal of the trial court decision that had granted a judgment of $8,869.32 against Thompson. The S.C. Court of Appeals reversed the trial court’s original judgment

Fighting Debt Collection

Tatiana Diaz came to us in full panic mode. A day prior, someone came to her door and handed her a pack of court documents. She was being sued over some money she allegedly owed. Tatiana could not understand anything more than that. Her first thought was to ignore it and hope it goes away. She had heard about South Carolina Legal Services (SCLS) before and, now, with nowhere else to turn, she applied for our help in figuring out what was happening.

Congratulations!

Our long-time staff attorney, Managing Attorney of the Greenville office and Education Law Unit Head, Kimaka Nichols-Graham is making power moves. Earlier this month, Nichols-Graham was unanimously elected to the Family Court Bench at the joint session of the South Carolina General Assembly. She will her position as Family Court Judge, At-Large, Seat 1 in the Summer. Join us in congratulating Kimaka Nichols-Graham on this monumental achievement and thanking her for her years of service and dedication in helping bring legal civil justice to all who cannot afford it.
